Remembering John Carl Buechler

This morning while perusing Twitter I found out Special Effects master John Carl Buechler passed away. John Carl Buechler will always be one of my heroes. He was quintessential horror. He helped spawn a generation of misfits like myself. Buechler created so many of the monsters and creatures that we grew up loving on the big screen. You could see his distinct style in every film he was a part of. He was an actor, writer, producer, director, and special effects artist. He’s one of the reasons I fell in love with horror.

John Carl Buechler directed one of my favorite horror films of all time, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood introducing Kane Hodder as Jason Vorhees. Kane Hodder is still known as Jason Vorhees because of that epic film. The two went on to work on Hatchet. While working on  A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, he created aged Alice makeups, Freddy’s chests of souls, chest hole, and the horror pizza. Buechler is also known for his work on Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Re-Animator, Ghoulies, From Beyond, TerrorVision, The Dungeonmaster, Troll, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, and many more. John Carl Buechler will be greatly missed.

According to IMDb, when he ran the make-up effects department at New World Pictures, Roger Corman called him “…the best in the business…”

Rest easy, sir.
