Interview With Sisters of Slaughter (Michelle Garza and Melissa Lason)

CHHR: Please give a brief introduction here.

We are Michelle Garza and Melissa Lason. We’re also known as the Sisters of Slaughter. We’ve been published by Thunderstorm books, Sinister Grin Press and Bloodshot Books. Our first novel was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award. We’re currently working on Silverwood The Door with Brian Keene, Richard Chizmar and Stephen Kozeniewski.

CHHR: When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

We have wanted to be writers ever since we were little kids. We loved reading and listening to our dad tell ghost stories so we wanted to share our imaginations with people.

CHHR: What does your writing schedule look like?

We try to get together a couple times a week. We have a schedule that we keep up with and we divide the writing load and attack it. We’re working on a novel and a short story collection in between working on Silverwood The Door.

CHHR: Do you have any interesting writing rituals? If so, what are they?

We usually like to sit on the couch, have some snacks, and surround ourselves in notes on what we’re working on along with what we’ve already written.

CHHR: Do you like writing short stories or novels?

We like both. Each one is equally gratifying and also frustrating to get going but still fun.

CHHR: How is the horror scene where you live?

We’re hermits and don’t get out often.

CHHR: Do you use outlines or do you go with the flow?

We mostly outline everything. Short stories can be written without a strict outline but with novels and novellas we are outline warriors.

CHHR: How did publishing your first book or short story change your writing process?

Our first short story was published and it showed us what to expect as far as how the editing process is handled and how promotion works. It revealed a little more of the business side of writing.

CHHR: What do you think makes a good horror story?

A good horror story has a good storyline that feels original even if it uses old tropes and a set of characters that you either want to see survive or would love to kill with your own hands. Also we see setting as another character in the story.

CHHR: What are you currently working on?

Silverwood the door, edits on our next novel from Sinister Grin and a short story collection…also a little something related to Mayan Blue.

CHHR: What is in your TBR pile?

Paul Tremblay, Somer Cannon, Amber Fallon.

CHHR: What is the last book that scared you?

GOBLIN by Josh Malerman

CHHR: What is your favorite horror book?

Too many to choose. Pet Semetary.

CHHR: What is your favorite horror film?

American Werewolf in London.

CHHR: What type of music do you listen to? What’s your favorite album?

We listen to a variety of music.
Favorites include:
Bolt Thrower For Victory
Type O Negative October Rust
Blind Guardian Nightfall in Middle Earth
Acid Bath Paegan Terrorism Tactics
Loreena McKennitt Parallel Dreams
The list is endless.

CHHR: What is your spirit animal?

Wolves

CHHR: What is your favorite beer?

PBR

CHHR: If you could have a beer with one author, who would it be?

Somer Cannon and Amber Fallon because they are our tribe.
