This is my first time reading Bentley Little. I don’t know if I would have started with this one if I had to do it over. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. The 90s were a strange time, and this book is a product of that decade. DOMINION is an odd book, but I couldn’t put it down. This book is disgusting, yet I kept turning the page. It was like I was in a trance. Maybe it was the wine or the grapes. Maybe it was Dion and Penelope that kept me reading. I think it was the blood, gore, and sex.
Bentley Little gets things rolling with that epic opening. That opening is explosive. It sets the tone for the rest of the book. If you can’t handle the first four pages, then you won’t be able to handle the rest of the book.
Dion and Penelope are very interesting characters. They are destined to be together. All of the characters have a role to play; there are no throwaways. I enjoyed the plot, but it was a little soporific. This book could have used another edit to cut it down to about three hundred pages.
There is tons of sex and death in this book. Blood and gore fill these pages. It really isn’t horror, but more like a sick and twisted fantasy. DOMINION has horror undertones, though. I just didn’t feel like there was enough tension and at times the story was a bit drab. The ending was not what I was expecting.
Overall, I liked this book. I will definitely read Bentley Little’s other work. His writing is really good. I think you guys would like his prose.
