This book is thoroughly creepy, from the cover to the atmosphere. The author’s prose is hauntingly good. I couldn’t sleep after reading this book. I stayed awake thinking about haunted apartments. This is my first time reading Ambrose Ibsen, but it won’t be my last.
Would you like to speak to the dead? Seriously, though. Would you honestly speak to the dead if you could? I think I would, but it would have to be in broad daylight.
Tori moves into a rundown studio apartment. Nothing works right, but hey, it’s a bargain. Everyone loves a bargain, am I right? Tori gets more than she paid for, though. A dark presence lurks around the apartment building. (I just got goosebumps, so I just turned my lamp on, it being dark and all.)
Tori and her friends mess around with an old Ouija board. Creepy things start happening. That is when her life starts spinning out of control. Madness ensues.
There is a lot to like about this book. I am a sucker for ghost stories and hauntings, so this was right in my wheelhouse. The setup was good, but I felt like the plot wasn’t organic. What I’m trying to say is, I’ve read this story before. Hell, I’ve watched movies similar to it. The only thing different about it is the location. People accidentally unleash something, then they have to try and figure out how to lock it back up.
Did this story creep me out? Yes, it’s a creepy read. I would definitely read it again. I love the author’s writing style. There’s not a dull moment in this book. The storyline is nice and tight, yet predictable. The characters don’t really have that much depth. The dark and grungy atmosphere makes the book. The way the author describes the building and the studio apartment is great. The scenes are good. The ending didn’t help, though. I saw it coming a mile away. I think the author was going for a twist ending, but it has been done before.
With that being said, it is well worth a read. It’s a good book, and it’s worth the hour or hour and a half that it takes to read. I bought this book, and I’m thoroughly satisfied with my purchase. I will be reading this author again in the future.
