{Book Review} THINGS WE FEAR by Glenn Rolfe

THINGS WE FEAR is a really good novella! The cover drew me in with the Ferris Wheel in the backdrop. Who doesn’t like a good Ferris Wheel? I’m a sucker for theme parks, too.

Summer has just begun, and fear is in season.

Aaron Jackson is the Ed. Tech. at Fairington Elementary School. He has a phobia drowning. A teacher named Emily Young is attracted to him. Matt Holmes is the Phys. Ed. teacher and he’s attracted to Emily Young. Matt is the ideal guy. Emily and Aaron vacation at a Maine beach. That is when the story gets going!

Glenn Rolfe sets the story up well with a phobia in the backdrop–a fear of drowning. While this is on the reader’s mind, Glenn adds an even darker element to the story. It is a tour-de-force. Once the story takes off, it’s a non-stop ride to the very end.

Rolfe does a great job of making the reader think. It seems like a straightforward story, but actually, it isn’t–this makes the story better. The tension stays tight throughout. The dialogue is solid. The characters are well-developed. Rolfe gives you just enough information about the characters to keep you invested. The ending is good, too.

I’ve read quite a few stories by Glenn Rolfe. His work keeps getting better, and I wish more people would give him a read. Rolfe’s writing keeps getting stronger. He’s one of the top authors of his generation.
